"Carnation Cartography"
Size: 5" x 7"
Papercutting on archival paper with vintage map scrapbook paper for background.
Cartography is the science and art of making maps and charts. Although the term may be taken broadly as comprising all the steps needed to produce a map, mapmakers tend to limit the use of the term to the map-finishing operations, in which the master manuscript is edited and color separation plates are prepared for lithographic printing.
As the beautiful vintage maps show, cartography is a mix of science and art, a combination of truth and beauty. May this "Carnation Cartography" bouquet remind you that science and art are not always at odds with one another. May it remind you that truth and fact is indeed beautiful in its own way.
Created as part of the Cartography of Flowers Collection.
This papercut art piece is hand-cut from one sheet of white archival paper and matted with a printed colored vintage map of the France. The floral bouquet is made up of a four carnation flowers surrounded by leaves and twigs.
